I was excited to find out that my pastel painting “Behind the SteelStacks” was accepted into the annual Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association exhibition, CITYSCAPE 2016.
I painted this piece in two relatively quick morning outings while my youngest son was in preschool. The weather cooperated perfectly (love those clear blue September skies) and I was thrilled that it worked out so well. The Bethlehem Steel Stacks are famous, but I chose a less iconic view, behind the stacks, looking back toward South Mountain. I was intrigued by the peek of hillside houses visible through the gap in the industrial buildings.
The show is at the Peale Museum in Baltimore — opening reception was Friday October 21st, 2016 and free viewing opportunities are October 22, 23, 29 and 30. My painting received honorable mention — and it sold, as well, which is always a great feeling. Thank you to the juror, buyer, Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association, and the show sponsors!
Edited to add: I was honored that this painting was chosen as one of Gail Sibley’s ten pastel picks for October!
